The mission of the Assessment SRIG is to promote dialogue and improve practice related to a broad range of assessment issues pertinent to music education with respect to assessment, measurement, and evaluation.

Improving Music Education Programs through Student Learning Assessment
Presenter: Timothy Brophy, University of Florida, Gainesville

The assessment of music education programs combines the assessment of musical performance, academic coursework in music, and professional education knowledge and skills. Assessment of student learning is a critical but sometimes challenging component of this process. We will present two successful approaches to music education program assessment with examples.
“Fun Failure”: What Video Games Can Teach Us about Providing Feedback to Music Students
Presenter: Ann Clements, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA
Failure in schools has become synonymous with negative repercussions and punitive measures. This paper will present a theoretical model from research in game development and design that highlights the ways in which video games keep players motived, hopeful, and striving for success despite their abnormally high rate of failure.
SRIG Business meeting - presented voting results. 2014-16 Chair Elect - Jeffrey Ward. The members have voted to change the name of the SRIG to Measurement, Evaluation and Assessment Special Research Interest Group, however, this change was not approved by the SRME Executive committee. The leadership of the SRIG explained their work the the NCCAS music standards writing team and the development of Model Cornerstone Assessments. The incoming Chair, Fred Burrack closed the meeting.
Submissions opened on Sept 1st, 2013 for proposals for consideration at the 2014 NAfME Music Research and Teacher Education National Conference, to be held in St. Louis, April 10-12.
The Special Research Interest Group (SRIG) for Assessment specifically requested proposals focused on the measurement of student learning, evaluation of teacher instruction and/or effectiveness, and validity/reliability testing of assessment measures. Projects using larger populations were preferred. Submissions must have been received by October 15th via the online platform. All submissions were reviewed by a three-member panel consisting of the current Chair, Chair-elect, and past Chair.
